Now part of the West Midlands, although previously in Warwickshire, is the largest City in the Warwickshire area. Coventry developed as the centre of the British Motor Industry and as such has suffered more than most places with the decline of that industry.
Coventry was the target of much Bombing during the second world war and much of the centre was destroyed during that time. Famously suffering heavy casualties, whilst Whitehall kept their knowledge of the oncoming raids a secret to protect the fact that they had broken the Enigma coding machines secrets. The re-building of Coventry included a spectacular new Cathedral next to the ruins of the old. The pedestrianised centre whilst at the front of sixties architecture, feels somewhat dated now
